Why are some bricks made with holes in the middle?

It is quite common for face bricks, particularly smooth ones, to be manufactured with holes in the middle, while plaster bricks and engineering grade structural bricks do not have any holes. Because a face brick is rather hard and designed to withstand a degree of moisture absorption plaster does not adhere to its surfaces very well and it needs to have holes in the middle to enable it to remain in the wall. Plaster/ stock bricks are manufactured softer and more absorbent than face bricks and are designed to be plastered. Since the primary function of a stock brick is load bearing and structural integrity, holes would compromise the strength of the brick.
